Shanbally House & Gardens

At various times of the year, we hold Volunteer days at Shanbally Organic Farm.  These are led by our growers under the leadership of Head Grower Heiko Klee. The day will involve getting hands on experience with the medicinal plants on the farm, in the walled garden and in the polytunnels. The work will be varied including hoeing, potting on plants weeding and harvesting crops. But remember, we are in Ireland so the work will be weather dependent!!!  We recommend you bring your wellies and good humour!!

If you have an interest in herbal plants and want to learn more about them, this is a great opportunity.  You will get the chance to learn and to get first hand experience.  At the end of the day, after we have delivered our vegetables to Steeples Cafe, volunteers are also welcome to take home vegetables and salad from the gardens.

Volunteer Testimonial:

“I recommend everything that being a volunteer entails! As a clinical herbalist, being on the land, learning the manner in which to physically harvest herbs for different types of extracts is very gratifying. Seeing the herbs at different stages, the smells, the feel of them etc. plus, the lads, Brían and Heiko… well they are both such a fountain of knowledge! And despite knowing all the ity bity details about which herb is which, the soil and aspect it prefers… they are wholly open to hear the medicinal and folklore uses for the particular herbs. We have great chats whilst working, continually learning in more ways than 1.  If you’ve thought about it once, I recommend, just get in the car and drive down, you honestly wont regret it”.
